How Can Cyberbullying Be Prevented?

Developing ‘prevention and intervention action plans’ is the most effective way to prevent cyberbullying in schools

 


Developing ‘prevention and intervention action plans’ is the most effective way to prevent cyberbullying in schools. The subjects listed below should be included in schools’ prevention and intervention action plans. 

 

- Raising awareness,

- Developing common understanding, 

- Supervision,

- Developing curriculum. 

 

Raising awareness: Above all, situations that can be classified as cyberbullying must be defined and students must be educated about behaviors that constitute cyberbullying. Then, a common understanding to combat cyberbullying must be developed among the school personnel, students and parents. Development of anti-cyberbullying policies and their implementation are necessary to achieve a common understanding of cyberbullying in schools. Anti-cyberbullying policies must be developed through participation of teachers, students and parents.

 

Developing common understanding: The principles and legal measures to prevent and reduce cyberbullying should be also clearly included. These principles must be implemented regardless of  the victims’ or  bully’s identity, status or gender. When these principles are not implemented, it can cause to encourage cyberbullying rather than preventing it. 

 

Supervision: It is necessary to develop trainings at schools to increase knowledge and skills of parents about the use of technology. These trainings aim to give students the message that their parents have knowledge about technology and they can get support from them whenever they need. 

 

Developing curriculum: It will be beneficial to implement the anti-bullying plan as a course at schools. In these courses, students must be educated about how they can recognize their friends who becomes a target of cyberbullying. Beside this, students must be educated the responsibility for each other (how not to be a bystander encouraged to step up when they witness cyberbullying. 

 

In addition to these four subjects, education on “Digital Citizenship” and “New Media Literacy”  must be seen as a meansof combating cyberbullying. Both of these curriculums must contain a unit on cyberbullying. The elective ‘Media Literacy” course which is taught at the 7th and 8th grades of middle schools is very important for anti-cyberbullying efforts. Course content must include prevention efforts and The emphasis must be given to consciousness raising rather than limiting access to technology.
